“SunSync Inc.”

Mock Tech Start-Up Project

The Case Challenge

For our Introduction to Finance (CCT321) Final Project, we were tasked with creating a fully developed startup business plan supported by a full financial model, cash flow projections, market sizing, and an investor-style pitch presentation. The concept had to be feasible, research-backed, and structured like a real early-stage venture seeking pre-seed or seed funding.

We built SunSync Inc., a wellness-first social app built to address a growing and well-documented set of problems among students and young professionals: rising stress levels, increasing social isolation, and chronically low sunlight exposure, all of which directly affect mood, sleep quality, and overall well-being.

SunSync created the perfect space for us to combine wellness research, behavioral insights, and financial strategy into a startup concept that felt both meaningful to our generation and relevant.

  • We chose SunSync Inc. because it allowed us to address one of the most visible and research-backed challenges facing Gen Z today: rising technological dependence and declining real-world social interaction. Our generation is known for constant screen time, the “Gen Z stare,” awkward social dynamics, and increased feelings of isolation …all intensified by long hours spent indoors and low exposure to sunlight, which directly affects mood, energy, and well-being.

Instead of building another social app that keeps people online, we wanted to design a concept that does the opposite:
an app that pushes Gen Z outside and into sunlight, movement, and real human connection.

SunSync offered the perfect opportunity to combine wellness data, environmental insights, and behavioural psychology into a startup idea that actually improves people’s lives. It let us explore a meaningful problem and build a solution rooted in health, connection, and intentional living…not more doom-scrolling.

  • Our research explored three pressing market problems:

    • Mental health decline among youth and young professionals.

    • Lack of daylight exposure, despite strong evidence linking sunlight to mood and sleep quality.

    • Difficulty discovering local activities, supportive spaces, and micro-communities.

We also analyzed the growing wellness market, user behavior patterns, and the cold-start challenges facing early-stage social apps.

  • Our solution was SunSync, a social wellness app that:

    • Suggests sunlight-based activities

    • Personalizes recommendations using mood + behavior data

    • Enables instant micro-meetups

    • Integrates local businesses and freelancers for in-app bookings

The business model combines freemium, B2B listings, and in-app ads, supported by a strong TAM–SAM–SOM analysis

    • SunSync Inc. aligns with the rise in mental health and wellness apps.

    • Offers a differentiated value: sunlight + mood + location.

    • Appeals directly to the high-stress, high-engagement student demographic.

    • Provides scalable revenue streams across B2C, B2B, and B2B2C markets.

    • Supported by full financial statements: income, cash flow, and balance sheet.

    • Led research on wellness trends, user psychology, and environmental data insights.

    • Helped define the app’s value proposition and feature set.

    • Collaborated on messaging for the pitch narrative.

    • Worked with my teammates to build financial projections and funding requirements.

    • Conducted competitive analysis and segmentation to justify the business model.
